Sensibilities in Transmutation

Luiz Deoclecio Massaro Galina

Director, Sesc São Paulo

From burning to rebirth, fire drives natural processes of transformation – where endings give rise to beginnings. In a world on the boil – whether figuratively, through overlapping social changes or, more literally, with global warming – art takes on a vital role as a practice that engages with, and gives symbolic form to, reality.

The 38th edition of the Panorama of Brazilian Art: A Thousand Degrees arrives at Sesc Campinas like a glowing ember, bringing together works that give form to, and shine a light on, sensibilities, identities, and experiences drawn from a wide range of contexts across Brazil. As a critical reflection on the country’s current situation, the exhibition presents artists whose practices address urgent issues – from environmental and technological concerns to political and spiritual ones.

Like matter in transformation, these works stretch the limits of language and expression and activate collective memories that resist dominant narratives: they call not only for reflection, but for action. The exhibition space is conceived as a site where contrasts and connections meet and often merge, and the works operate as points of rupture – exposing fractures in entrenched systems of thought and pointing toward new ways of inhabiting the world.

With this traveling edition of the exhibition – first held in 2024 at MAC USP and organized by the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo – Sesc aims to expand public access to the symbolic layers that shape the show. Beyond the artworks themselves, the program includes educational activities that deepen the exchange between artists and audiences. Like the transitional states of matter set in motion by heat, Sesc aspires to be a space of learning where subjective processes – between what has been and what is yet to come – find form and visibility through the creative experience that defines the artistic field.

The Panorama of Brazilian Art series is a milestone in the history of exhibitions. First held in 1969, the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM São Paulo) Panorama has played a key role in shaping the museum’s contemporary art collection through its various exhibitions.

Curated by Germano Dushá, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Ariana Nuala, this year’s edition, titled A Thousand Degrees, examines the contemporary world through extreme conditions. It tackles not only historical and sociopolitical issues but also ecological and technological debates, sparking initiatives that encourage reflection on the role of art in society.

For several years, MAM has been building partnerships with other cultural institutions across the state of São Paulo. The traveling exhibition of the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art at Sesc Campinas marks a new phase of collaboration and shared effort to support the arts.
